Not only has the world been devastated by a deadly pandemic, but much of the West Coast of the United States has been forced to battle fatal<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wildfires at the same time. In 2020, California even saw its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/95JW-4JWN\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biggest wildfire in history<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/C25G-RCJM\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">September 2020,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 30 people have been killed by the fires while dozens more are still missing. For the past few months, virtually all of the West Coast states have been forced to deal with their own \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/RW2T-UKVJ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">twindemic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to increasing global temperatures, wildfires are escalating in intensity and frequency. According to an analysis by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/Q72C-FP2A\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climate Central,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cbig wildfires are [now] three times more common across the west than in the 1970s, [and] the wildfire season is [now] three months longer. Additionally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/LP4S-476C\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">climatechange.org<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> claims, \u201cwhile climate change may not be the root cause of these extreme weather disasters, scientists have been able to conclude, with growing confidence, that climate change plays a significant role in driving both the intensity and scale of these incidents.\u201d This year alone, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/4V5G-CFAE\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wildfires have burned over 3.3 million acres in California, which is larger than the state of Connecticut<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/79A6-MPTF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent updates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> report that wildfires have already burned over five million acres across California, Oregon, and Washington.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The West Coast wildfires are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/LQW8-FAR3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hitting minority communities the hardest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/Y2UU-E6GR\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released by researchers at the University of Washington and the Nature Conservancy suggests that \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/BRN5-U2BV\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">racial and ethnic minorities face greater vulnerability to wildfires compared with primarily white communities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/KW3P-VJ37\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nature Conservancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201ccommunities that are mostly Black, Hispanic or Native American experience 50% greater vulnerability to wildfires as compared to other communities.\u201d Unlike the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/M7Y5-677A\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">celebrities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who can afford to protect themselves and their property by hiring private firefighting companies,\u00a0 people in these communities often don\u2019t even have access to vehicles to escape the fires or other resources to protect themselves and recover after the damages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A young girl named Ta\u2019Kira\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/MF4N-KNKH\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">story<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helps emphasize the fact that, not only are the wildfires physically destroying these communities, but the smoke from the fires is also causing long term health problems. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/minorityhealth.hhs.gov\/omh\/browse.aspx?lvl=4&amp;lvlid=15\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have shown that African American children are at a greater risk of developing asthma due to the hazardous smoke conditions in these communities. In this case, Ta\u2019Kira\u2019s family was told to keep windows and doors closed to keep the smoke out. However, her apartment complex was built more than 50 years ago, and other residents interviewed at the complex testified to the fact that the smoke comes right in through the windows.\u00a0 Ta\u2019Kira was\u00a0 diagnosed with Asthma at age 5 and,during the 2017 fires, she was rushed to the hospital every three to four months due to wheezing and shortness of breath.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wildfires have proven to be extremely deadly and, unless steps are taken towards addressing climate change, they are going to continue to get worse. While there are different approaches that can be taken to help address this issue, such as providing aid to those most in need or pushing for government action,\u00a0 various W<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/MN9W-AB4T\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">est Coast climate activist groups<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are showing that it is possible to provide assistance and fight for change.
